Bikes, Lists, Bunnies and Santa

Biketampa
Many great things are taking off in Tampa in efforts to develop a bicycle community. The Bicycle Bash coming up soon and the CBE bike shop expanding to include more sales space and a LOUNGE! are a couple examples. Alan Snel even managed to get the City to put up some Share the Road signs on a particulary tough stetch of his morning ride. I see more and more folks riding and the weather will most certainly give those numbers a boost. The thing is, I read daily about the group fun rides in other cities like Austin, Portland, Minneapolis, Atlanta and Seattle. Maybe I'm missing something living in N. Tampa, perhaps there is currently a huge Dress like a Bunny, Zombie or Various WhatHaveYou Ride going on right now in S. Tampa. But I don't think so.*

Anyway, this whole rant was inspired by Jim over at Oil is for Sissies (OIFS) who notes that Tampa falls into place #6 in a national study on bicycle commuting. That seems nuts to me. It should be noted that Jim linked to this particular research to dispute the more traditional list that includes, Davis, Boulder, etc.

Anyway, I find this stuff interesting.

*I am planning a Tampa Fun Ride - perhaps you'll even get a flyer at the Bicycle Bash.

I bike three times a week for about 2 hours--and always love to ride with other people. There are numerous bike groups that meet on DI on Sundays (and ST Pete has a HUGE bike contingent that meets on Saturdays). Check out Tampabay Freewheelers' website for more links. I do believe there is a ride in N Tampa. But Yea, in general, Tampa sucks!
