One of the things I hated as a kid, but love as an adult, was my dad's
response to "What does _____ mean?' The response was such an inevitability that I
would often get halfway through the question and about-face toward the
bookshelf to get the dictionary. That's because "Look it up" was always
the answer. I didn't love the answer but it certainly instilled a curiosity for unfamiliar words.
This morning my boss worked in the following words during a meeting that
gave me pause. It wasn't that I'd never heard the words before, but I was unsure of several of their meanings. These aren't the most obscure words to be certain. Several are
common, though he was using an uncommon usage for a couple. Anyway, I
looked them all up afterward just to be certain.
The words were:
ecumenical*
parochial*
opulent
panacea
*He was using both of these in their general sense - outside of their religious context.
Maybe you know all of them well, but if not, go look them up.
