I heard an interview with the creators of the film King Corn on WMNF last week. I was aware of the pervasive high fructose corn syrup ingredient in our food supply but I hadn't thought through the many other ways processed corn has infiltrated our lives. Some of this info I already knew, however I wasn't
seeing the cause and effect. here are some of the highlights:
- Corn is cheap due to farm subsidies
- We feed corn to everything. Us, animals we eat, animals we don't eat, our cars (ethanol), everything. I was particularly taken with the discussion around cows. Cows can't naturally digest corn. They prefer grass. We force feed them corn and have to use antibiotics to counter act the side effects. Even cow based ingredients are added to the corn so that we are feeding cow to cows too. GROSS, not to mention inhumane.
- Cheap processed corn derivatives cause obesity, among other potential threats such as diabetes, to rise in the poorest populations.
This is the best quick primer I've found. It's a two part video interview with one of the creators.
Here is the official trailer for their film.
